Call For Papers

The Balkan History Association is preparing a volume on relations between the Romanian principalities (Moldavia, Wallachia, Transylvania) and the Ukrainian lands in the early modern era. During this period political transformations and complex processes of social change took place, and the foundations of modern states and identities were laid. Such changes are usually seen as evolutionary processes and are thus considered to be integral to the histories of modern nations. These processes also influenced in various ways the evolution of political, cultural and social relations between the Romanian principalities and the Cossack Hetmanate. However, the overarching political framework was determined by the main regional actors: the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austrian Habsburgs, the Ottoman Empire, and Muscovy.

The volume will focus on: internal political struggles; elites and their relationships to regional actors; political collaboration due to shared interests; religious contacts; the activities of certain social stratification representing the “nations” or their own categorization; systems of social identity; and the like. Researchers are invited to submit book chapters on the following topics: representatives of the Cossacks and the Haydamak movement in early modern Ukraine; Cossacks on the ruler’s throne of Moldavia; the lands between Dniester and the Southern Bug under the Moldavian ruler Gheorghe Duca in the second half of the 17th century; the roles of high-ranking clergy of Romanian origin in Kyivan Orthodoxy; the Romanian principalities as models for the development of Ukrainian statehood; alliances with Transylvania; Moldavia as a refuge for political emigration from the Cossackdom; contacts with the Balkans, Cossack influence beyond the limits of the Hetmanate; the contributions of well-known figures to the regional history: Dmytro Vyshnevetsky, Ivan Pidkova (Ioan Nicoară Potcoavă), Hryhory Loboda (Grigore Lobodă), Petro Mohyla (Petru Movilă), Tymish Khmelnitsky, Gheorghe Duca, Ivan Mazepa, Pylyp Orlik, Danylo Apostol (Dănilă Apostol), Captain Verlan etc.
