Intersections | Cross-sections, a two-day interdisciplinary conference organized by the Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture at York University and Ryerson University, invites academic and artistic submissions for the Intersections | Cross-sections 2019 Graduate Conference & Art Exhibition, to be held on March 8 and 9, 2019.
The conference theme, Versus, encourages submissions that explore and engage with contradictions, oppositions, and controversies. We are particularly interested in proposals for works that consider the conversations, dialogues, and debates that are produced when we respectfully consider divergent and/or seemingly opposed viewpoints. Potential prompts for submission include, but are not limited to: Controversy in the media Controversial objects or spaces Narrative oppositions in literature or film Contradicting discourses in academia, politics, or popular culture ‘Hacktivism’, or, digital media and freedom of information movements Online radicalization and the rise of the alt-right ‘Fake news’ and the role of the media in creating divisive political climates How do different modes of communication produce different dialogues? Free speech or hate speech? Questions of protest and dialogue on university campuses What is the role of contradictions in constructing and maintaining ideological systems? Can controversy be a productive force for disrupting systems of power? Image, video, meme, and/or sound juxtapositions for meaning-creation Distinctions between fiction and non-fiction, and the blurring of these categories in art Deadline: Submissions due January 11th, 2019. |
