Call For Papers

First International Workshop on Architectures and Paradigms for Engineering Quantum Software

Sacramento, California, USA | 13th November, 2020

The workshop bridges gaps between disciplines, and brings researchers working on traditional software engineering in contact with persons from non-software centric fields: We believe that many unsolved and interesting issues can be found at boundaries and intersections between fields. We also believe that a big aspect of future quantum computing will concern software, and software engineering should consequently act as a platform to connect. Many important questions regarding quantum software concern fundamental scientific issues, but must at the same time show their merits on real machines.
APEQS 2020 will be held in conjunction with ACM Joint European Software Engineering Conference and Symposium on the Foundations of Software Engineering (ESEC/FSE 2020) (https://2020.esec-fse.org/) in Sacramento, California, USA on November 13th, 2020.

Goals of the workshop include

- Generate inputs from software side to hardware and infrastructure, and devise migration paths to new quantum-classical hybrid architectures
- Show ways to measure performance of quantum computers (quality, speed, cost, latency, scalability, and new KPIs)
- Address gate-based systems, annealers, and experimental architectures (as long as they are reasonably programmable via appropriate software interfaces)
- Discuss use of simulators to predict capabilities and effective performance of solutions, and for testing and integration
- Focus on interfaces, deployment, experimental evaluation, and hybrid quantum-classical architectures. We do deliberately not focus on issues that might materialize in decades

The workshop will discuss early, experimental results in research, and features a demonstration part to provide attendees with first-hand experience in using novel quantum computing techniques that goes beyond the simple examples offered by various web services. This will give researchers a realistic intuition about quantum programming, which is important quantum technologies might often be overrated by making unrealistic assumptions about the nature and potentials of quantum computers, or underrated because of too pessimistic assumptions on the maturity of existing and near/mid-term available devices.

Submission info for manuscripts

APEQS strives for an inclusive and diverse program, and solicits a range of varied contributions: Full research papers (8 pages); short papers (4 pages) that may contain early or preliminary research results; demos that may optionally be accompanied by a published two-page summary (submitting a demo requires a description of at most two pages to be submitted, together with an explanatory 5-10 minute video as a preview of the live demo). We will deliberately not accept pure position papers without sufficient technical content, or other (mostly) marketing materials for commercial offerings.
All manuscripts will be peer reviewed and – after presentation – be published as workshop proceedings to the main ESEC/FSE conference. Templates for the manuscripts can be downloaded from the main conference’s website.
The formatted manuscript should be electronically submitted as pdf via EasyChair.
