On April 10 to13, 2019, the Faculty of Arts & Sciences at Azm University will host an international conference on themes relevant to criminology, penology, and prisons in the Mediterranean region. The conference will survey different penal systems and philosophies, best practices, current challenges and inroads in penal legislation and structures, and the management and construct of prisons.
Many, if not most, countries in the Mediterranean currently contend with challenges in their penal system which, in some areas, have been further aggravated by internal instability or an inflow of refugees. Many prisons suffer from overcrowding, mismanagement, recidivism, and human rights violations. On the other hand, innovative practices in a number of European countries show promise. The conference will welcome papers that examine the status quo, or that propose new ideas to address existing challenges. While all abstracts submitted will be considered, the conference is structured along three interrelated rubrics: Penology Denunciation, Criminal Justice, Mental Illness and Crime, Prevention, Reform and Rehabilitation, Human Rights, Sexuality and the Law, Migration and the Law, Illegal Immigration and the Penal Code, Drugs and Society, Victims and Victimology, Cyber Crime, Forensics, White Collar Crime Prison reform Monetization, Administration.
