Call For Papers

Studies on Wikipedia have highlighted its value as one of the maximum exponents of collaborative work. Pursuing its goal of becoming the “sum of all human knowledge”, the last two decades have seen how an information product as traditional as an encyclopedia became the main source of referential information for society. This structure houses, in addition to the encyclopedia, other projects such as Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. The richness of its content, the diversity of approaches and interactions that occur in it has made it to be used as an object of study and field research in a number of disciplines, from computer science and computing to health, through social and human sciences.

Área Abierta. Revista de comunicación audiovisual y publicitaria (https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARAB), an academic journal published by the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), opens the call for a special issue dedicated to the communicational and informational aspects of Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, such as Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. The main topics, although not exclusive:

• Wikipedia in the media: use and reference.
• The media and Wikipedia: attitudes.
• Breaking and current news in Wikipedia articles: evolution and life cycles.
• Vandalism, fake news, and content verification processes.
• Image, audio and video on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.
• Visualization of information and data from Wikipedia, Commons and Wikidata.
• Editing and collaborative construction of knowledge.
• Literacy and Wikipedia.
• Communication processes and interaction in the community of editors and users.
• Science communication on Wikipedia.
• Construction of collective memory through Wikipedia.
• Biases in the construction of collaborative discourse.
• Women's spaces in Wikipedia.
• Public relations and corporate presence on Wikipedia.
• Communication campaigns for Wikimedia projects.

Papers can be presented in Spanish, English or Portuguese. Submissions must comply with the instructions in https://revistas.ucm.es/index.php/ARAB/about/submissions. The deadline for receipt of papers is December 1, 2020. All submitted papers will be subject to blind peer review. The publication is scheduled for June 2021.
