Call for submissions

We invite you to submit a broad range of contributions related to the
latest achievements in eHealth, biomedical and health informatics. The
specific focus for the MIE2012 conference is the various roles of
eHealth in pursuing benefits seen in quality of life for patients,
health-care personnel, citizens and the society.

We encourage you to submit a contribution about methodologies and
applications, successful stories or lessons learned from not so
successful projects in the health-care domain.

The MIE2012 Scientific Programme Committee (SPC) invites you to submit
contributions in form of:

- Full papers
- Posters
- Panels
- Workshops
- Short communications
- Tutorials

Moreover the MIE2012 'Village of the Future' invites proposals for
presentation of national, regional and European projects and
initiatives demonstrating quality improvements in the form of
materialized project ideas and innovations. The SPC encourages project
leaders from both research institutions and companies to send
proposals for active participation.

Each type of submission is described in detail below. Please observe
that an individual can act as submitting author for only one
contribution within each specific submission type.

Types of contributions

Full paper (Deadline January 15, 2012, 23:59 UTC)

Full papers are scientific papers, future vision papers or review
papers related to methodologies and/or applications. Full Paper
structure includes: title, names, affiliations, locations (city,
state, and country) of all authors, abstract (up to 200 words), and 4-
6 keywords; body of text: introduction, methods, results, discussion,
and references. The maximum length of a paper submission is five A4
camera-ready pages, and should strictly follow the formatting rules of
the provided IOS Press template. All submitted papers will be subject
to a peer-review process by three independent reviewers. Accepted full
papers will be included in the MIE2012 Proceedings, indexed in MEDLINE
and published by IOS Press; they will be available also on the
Conference CD-ROM, and on the EFMI website. Presenters of accepted
full papers are allocated 15 minutes, discussion included. The best
presentations will be nominated for submission as an article in
Methods of Information in Medicine.

Poster (Deadline January 15, 2012, 23:59 UTC)

A poster is a scientific contribution related to methodologies and/or
applications, which is better presented graphically than verbally. The
authors should prepare their proposal that includes: title, names,
affiliations, locations (city, state, and country) of all authors,
abstract (up to 200 words), and 3-5 keywords; body of text:
introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references. The
maximum length is three A4 camera-ready pages according to IOS Press
template. All poster proposals are subject to peer-review by three
reviewers. Accepted posters will be included in the MIE2012
Proceedings, indexed in MEDLINE and published by IOS Press; they will
be available also on the Conference CD-ROM, and on the EFMI website. A
poster should be prepared as in A1 or A0 format, and be presented in
the scheduled poster sessions at MIE2012. The best presentations will
be nominated for submission as an article in Methods of Information in
Medicine.

Workshop (Deadline March 1, 2012, 23:59 UTC)

A workshop is aimed at discussing a scientific subject with active
engagement of the audience with a clear objective/methodology/outcome
that can be stated. A workshop involves 4-6 speakers, who introduce
the subject. The duration of a workshop is 90 minutes. The authors
should prepare their proposal that includes: title, names,
affiliations, locations (city, state, and country) of all authors,
abstract (up to 200 words), and 3-5 keywords; body of text:
introduction of the topic, aim for discussion, specific contributions
by each speaker, and expected outcome. The maximum length is three A4
camera-ready pages, prepared according to the provided IOS Press
template. All workshop proposals are subject to review by members of
the Scientific Program Committee. All accepted workshop proposals will
be available on the MIE2012 conference CD-ROM and on the EFMI website.
Registration of the involved speakers is mandatory for final
acceptance and publication of the workshop. The submitters of the best
workshops will be asked to provide an extended paper with the achieved
results of the workshop. These papers will be nominated for
publication in European Journal for Biomedical Informatics.

Panel (Deadline March 1, 2012, 23:59 UTC)

A panel is a moderated discussion of an important theme by domain
experts (panelists). The discussion of each controversial item starts
with short statements by the panelists. A panel involves 4-6
panelists, and the duration of a panel is 90 minutes. The authors
should prepare their proposal that includes: title, names,
affiliations, locations (city, state, and country) of all authors,
abstract (up to 200 words), and 3-5 keywords; body of text should
include: an introduction of the topic and a description of the focus
for each panelist. A panel proposal is three A4 camera-ready pages,
prepared according to the provided IOS Press template. Panel proposals
are subject to review by members of the Scientific Program Committee.
All accepted panel proposals will be available on the MIE2012
conference CD-ROM and on the EFMI website. Registration of the
involved panelists is mandatory for final acceptance and publication
of the panel. The submitters of the best panels will be asked to
provide an extended paper with the summation of the discussion of the
panel outcomes. These papers will be nominated for publication in
European Journal for Biomedical Informatics.

Short communication (Deadline March 1, 2012, 23:59 UTC)

A short communication is a scientific contribution about work in
progress. All proposals are subject to review by the Scientific
Program Committee. The proposal should include: title, names,
affiliations, locations (city, state, and country) of all authors,
abstract (up to 200 words), and 4-6 keywords; body of text:
introduction, methods, results, discussion, and references.
Contributions should not exceed the maximum of three camera-ready A4
pages, according to the IOS Press template. All accepted proposals
will be available on the conference CD-ROM and on the EFMI website.
Accepted short communications will be presented as a 10 minutes oral
presentation or as a poster according to the preference of the authors
and the SPC decisions.

Tutorial (Deadline March 1, 2012, 23:59 UTC)

A tutorial is aimed at introducing and elaborating on a special topic
according to an educational model and encouraging active engagement of
the audience. A tutorial may involve three instructors, and the
duration of a tutorial is 180 minutes. The proposal should include:
title, names, affiliations, locations (city, state, and country) of
all authors/teachers, abstract (up to 200 words), and 4-6 keywords;
body of text: a rationale, target audience, pre-requisite knowledge,
educational goals, a summary of the specific contribution of each
teacher. The submitted tutorial proposal is up to three A4 camera-
ready pages, prepared according to the IOS Press template. All the
tutorial proposals undergo review by the Scientific Program Committee.
All accepted tutorial proposals will be available on the conference
CD-ROM and on the EFMI website. Registration of the involved
instructors is mandatory for final acceptance of the tutorial.

'Village of the future' proposal (Deadline April 15, 2012, 23:59 UTC)

The "Village of the Future" is a vivid agora where national, regional
and European projects and other initiatives can present, demonstrate,
discuss and eLounge sharing materialized ideas, innovations and
creating new coalitions for the future. We invite you to submit
proposals for the village like: presentation, demonstration, living
poster, collaborative session, participation in the Mash-Up Marathon
to integrate eHealth applications or other forms of expressing the
future. The village is open to all "citizens", with a focus on our
young generation, presenting innovative initiatives and results. In
particular proposals are welcomed based on technologies like the
Semantic web, social media and web 2.0/3.0, which contribute to new
ways of health-care delivery and guiding citizens, patients and health
professionals towards to higher quality of life. A special area of the
agora will be devoted to the European eHealth Education Alliance
initiative to facilitate exchange and creation of programs for e-
health strategy, social software, wiki-education for eHealth, capacity
building and education of the workforce and citizens in eHealth. The
results will be linked to the Summit of the European and US alliances'
effort to develop eHealth policy imperatives, planned to take place
during the MIE2012.

The final structure of the "Village of the Future" will be based on
the accepted contributions. Village participants are invited to submit
their ideas as a proposals using the IOS Press template and include:
an abstract (up to 200 words), names, affiliations, and locations
(city, state, and country) of all authors, a text addressing the
topic, and your preferred way of presentation. All proposals will be
reviewed by the SPC and if accepted you will be contacted by the "Lord
Mayor of the Village" about the realisation of your contribution. All
accepted proposals will be available on the conference CD-ROM and on
the EFMI website. All presenters have to register for the conference.

General Requirements

For all submissions, please see instructions for authors, as you
prepare your camera ready contribution strictly adhering to the IOS
template's formatting requirements. The structure and length of the
paper depends on the chosen contribution type. Go to the online
submission section for detailed instruction for the submission
process. Final acceptance and publishing of a contribution to MIE2012
is conditioned on the following:

- submitted in due time for the type of contribution
- revision of the contribution according to reviewer's or SPC's suggestions
- formatted strictly adhering to the requirements specified in the provided IOS template
- the presenting author(s) are registered to the conference and
delegate fee is paid, no later than May 7, 2012 (early bird deadline).

Contributions can be submitted until the deadline stated for the
submission-type you choose. Please observe the following important

- January 15, 2012: Submission deadline for full papers and posters
- March 1, 2012: Submission deadline for panels, workshops, short

- March 27, 2012: Notification of results of reviews for full papers,
posters, panels, workshops, short communications, and tutorials
- April 15, 2012: Submission deadline for "Village of the future"
proposals
- April 17, 2012: Resubmission deadline for camera ready full papers,
posters, panels, workshops, short communications, and tutorials
- May 2, 2012: Notification of final acceptance for all contributions
- May 7, 2012: Registration deadline for presenting authors. NB: If
the author of a contribution has not registered, the contribution will
be excluded!

Awards

We welcome nominations of full papers and posters for MIE2012 awards:

- The Peter L. Reichertz Memorial Prize will be awarded to the best
scientific paper by a young researcher' not older than 30 years.

- The Rolf Hansen Memorial Prize will be awarded to the best paper on
electronic health records.

- The Best Poster Award will be for the best poster presenting an
innovative idea and application.
