Call for Papers - 2012 Utah Genealogical Association Conference on Family History
“Climbing Your Family Tree”
Friday and Saturday, September 21-September 22, 2012

Proposals are now being accepted for the 2012 Utah Genealogical Association (UGA) Family History Conference, which will be held Friday and Saturday, September 21-22, 2012 at the Larry H. Miller Salt Lake Community College Campus (9750 S. 300 W., Sandy, UT 84070).

We are requesting calls for both short and long presentations of either 20 or 60 minutes in length, including time for questions and answers. Each presentation should reflect the latest status of research and publication on the topic. Please do not submit more than seven proposals.

Additionally, are you willing to provide one-on-one research assistance? UGA would like to offer Ask a Genealogist services. Search sessions will last 60 minutes in length and conference attendees must register for these services by specific geographic location or record type.

Communication will be available for the genealogist and conference attendee before the conference if you are interested in accessing that material. If you are willing to work in this forum, please email your area of specialization such as include in your submission the following: “Ask a Genealogist” – UK, Census Records. Please be as broad or as specific as you are comfortable assisting another individual.

The deadline for proposals is Monday, April 30, 2012. We welcome proposals for fresh content that allow participants to gain new skills and helpful information in the following areas of family history and genealogy:
NEW THIS YEAR – 20 minute proposals on varied topics
Using new technologies for family research with a particular emphasis on getting all members of the family involved in family history research using: e.g. Facebook, Twitter, GPS, Blogging, YouTube, IPod, EBooks, EAudio Books, Apps, Digital Photography, etc.
Getting started with… (topics)
Classes specifically designed for those who have never done any research and other beginner topics
Research methodology: research process, pedigree analysis, evidence evaluation, tracing immigrants, etc.
Beginning, intermediate, and advanced research methodology in:
British Isles (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales)
Germany
Scandinavia
United States (regional topics)
Canada
Other world areas
Family organizations and collaboration
Writing, editing and publishing family history
Family History Center support and family history consultant training
Presentations should not only inform, but should provide step-by-step instructions to help participants use the class materials. All syllabus material should reflect the content of classes, both in detail and in sequence of instruction.

Presentation style must be PowerPoint, lecture, or Internet. Presenters will need to provide their own laptop computer with Internet connection. LCD projector will be available but presenters will need to advise committee what type of connection they will need i.e. Mac or PC. Speakers should plan to bring their PowerPoint slide show on a flash drive, CD-ROM, or DVD-ROM in a format readable by Windows or MAC. Be sure to have available a backup copy of your presentation. If yours is an Internet presentation, you must have screen shot backups in case of Internet failure.

Proposals must include:
Full name of presenter
Brief biographical sketch for the syllabus (50 words maximum)
Title of presentation
Class description to be used for advertising brochure and web page (50 words maximum) that includes detailed information about the main topics to be discussed in the class
Audience skill level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
If your presentation deals with a country, research topic or technology that is likely to draw fewer than 15 students, indicate whether you will still teach it
Medium of presentation
PowerPoint
Internet—requires screen shot backup in case of Internet failure
Requested audio/visual equipment including LCD projector
Current e-mail, mailing address, telephone number(s)
A list of your previous experience presenting at conferences or workshops in the past three years, including titles of presentations
Compensation

Speakers participating in the Conference will receive:
Complimentary registration
Free meal
Conference syllabus on CD
Follow the syllabus guidelines listed above
Completed syllabus must be submitted by midnight on Monday, July 16, 2012

Initial acceptance of presentation proposals will be sent by the program committee by the middle of May 2012.
