The aim of the Joint Conference on Data Science 2018 (JCDS18) is to bring together academics, policy-makers, and business people passionate about the emergent field of data science as a force for strategic transformation in an academic and professional context. This data science conference arises out of a series of successful predecessor conferences (like e.g. EDISON Champions Conferences initiated by the Europen H2020 project EDISON); the data science conference series has been created to foster a vital exchange between parties from industry and academia interested in the wide field of data science. Essentially, the increasing availability of vast libraries of digitised information influences the ways in which we comprehend and analyse our environment, and realise businesses for our societal benefit. In this situation, data science creates a transformational force with impact on current innovation potential in industry and academia. Given this transformational potential, it is inevitable that new teaching activities will play a significant role in realising this potential.
JCDS18 will be the first data science conference of this annual series of international conferences. The guiding theme of the conference series is deepening the role of data science as a transformational force for innovation, discovery, and societal benefit. JCDS18 therefore takes up topics that support this grand challenge, that are based around recent data science research and innovation trends besides teaching and training. The data science conference will realise this concern in an integrated programme of lightning workshops and scientific/technical conference tracks, invited talks from renowned speakers, along with network events, as well as accompanying demo sessions. Essentially, the conference will focus on two tightly connected but distinct subject areas: Establishing the profession of a Data Scientist is the consequent conclusion from the present situation and JCDS18 will have a focus on the acquisition of skills and competences that individuals need in the new data science era, and how best to address the growing demand from organisations for individuals at all levels to be suitably equipped to thrive in the digitised economy. The challenge is that both work and the research environment are transforming into interdisciplinary environments, so data-related skillsets have to be harmonised in order to foster collaboration. Data Science is an interdisciplinary scientific and technical research and development field that amalgamates techniques and approaches for efficient and effective data management, integration, analysis, visualisation, and interaction with vast amounts of data, all as a critical prerequisite for a successful digitised economy. JCDS18 will therefore have a focus on the demonstration, presentation and discussion of innovative research and development results from related topics around machine learning, information visualisation, big data management, analysis, reproducibility, and ethics.
