First published in 1917, The Turkish Journal of Sociology is a publication of the Department of Sociology of the Istanbul University Faculty of Letters, the first and leading sociology department in Turkey. The Turkish Journal of Sociology is a peer-reviewed, biannually published journal covered by international indexes such as Clarivate Analytics Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), ProQuest CSA Sociological Abstracts and EBSCO SocINDEX (for further information, see http://tjs.istanbul.edu.tr/en).

The second of the two issues of Turkish Journal of Sociology to appear in 2018 will address the critical readings on the concept of civilization and the history of civilizations in different historical, geographical, political contexts and from different disciplinary point of views.

Although the modern concept of civilization has emerged and institutionalized in context of imperial Eurocentric globalization, the contested views of civilization has deviated from its etymological roots and acquired new meanings through the period of decolonization to cold war and post-cold war period. Even though early dominant usages of this term implied developmental hierarchies and differences among various societies, in time, the concept became employed to analyze the relations between civilizations. Ongoing intense debates over this issue carried the concept of civilization beyond being merely an analytical tool and paved the way for a new disciplinary field, i.e. History of Civilizations.

Turkish Journal of Sociology invites original article contributions dealing with the politics as well as intellectual history of the idea of civilization from multi-disciplinary perspectives.

Change and differentiation of the reading of the History of Civilization during World War 1 and interwar era (the idea of decline, popularity of the circular history approaches)
The transformation of the reading of the History of Civilization after World War 2
Re-transformation and differentiation of reading of the History of Civilization: post-structuralist, and post-modern readings
What are different approaches to History of civilizations in various geographies, cultural and civil environments, and of political centers from the age of empires to era of nation states.
