Aim of ISC'2016

The aim of the 14th annual Industrial Simulation Conference (ISC'2016, the premier industrial simulation conference in Europe, is to give a complete overview of this year's industrial simulation related research and to provide an annual status report on present day research within the European Community and the rest of the world in line with European industrial research projects.

With the integration of artificial intelligence, agents and other modelling techniques, simulation has become an effective and appropriate decision support tool in industry. The exchange of techniques and ideas among universities and industry, which support the integration of simulation in the everyday workplace, is the basic premise at the heart of ISC'2016 conference. The ISC'2016 conference consists of four major parts; the first part concerns itself with discrete event simulation methodology, the second and biggest part with industrial simulation applications, a third one with industrial themed workshops, and last but not least the fourth part, namely the poster sessions for students. The whole is then illustrated by an exhibition.

The ISC also focuses on simulation applications for the factory of the future (e.g. transformable factories, networked factories, learning factories, digital factories) depending on different drivers such as high performance, high customization, environmental friendliness, high efficiency of resources, human potential and knowledge creation as set out by the EU directories. A second focus for ISC'2016 is on new robotics applications.
Thirdly this edition also looks at present day research in urban simulation as an expansion of intelligent traffic and transport simulation and fourthly on new developments in simulation driven engineering.

Further to last year's introduction we continue to also organize an Apparel and Textile Simulation track plus a special workshop on Simulation-based evaluation of interactive systems.

All submissions will be peer reviewed by at least three members of the International Program Committee. Accepted papers will be published in the conference Proceedings (both print and electronic format), that will be copyrighted and widely disseminated.
EUROSIS proceedings are indexed by ISI, IET and SCOPUS. Selected papers are published in several journals usch as the International Journal of Computer Aided Engineering and Technology.

Semiconductor Manufacturing Simulation

Recently, the electronics industry has become the largest industry in the world. One important area of this industry is the manufacturing of integrated circuits (IC) on silicon wafers. Semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities (wafer fabs) are complex manufacturing systems that contain hundreds of machines and thousands of lots. Currently, it seems that the improvement of operational processes creates the best opportunity to realize necessary cost reductions. Therefore, the development of efficient planning and control strategies is highly desirable in the semiconductor domain.

In order to create, implement and test the required novel strategies, it is necessary to take new opportunities of information technology into account. Modelling and Simulation are widely accepted tools in planning and production control in wafer fabs because they are able to deal with the huge complexity of modern wafer fabs.

CUDAT is a parallel computing platform and programming model invented by NVIDIA. It enables dramatic increases in computing performance by harnessing the power of the graphics processing unit (GPU). Developers are using the GPU to do general-purpose scientific and engineering computing across a range of platforms.
GPU computing is possible implemented: in modeling real or virtual environment - word, simulation how powerful system - HPC, with a teraflop of floating point performance. The crunches application task designed for anything from different domain of science, finance, medicine, etc....
Verification, Validation and Accreditation

The term validation is applied to those processes, which try to determine whether or not a simulation is correct with respect to the "reality". More prosaically, validation is concerned with the question "Are we building the right system?" Verification, on the other hand, seeks to answer the question "Are we building the system right?" Accreditation considers efforts to meet use case criteria. Here the question to answer is "Are the model and the system acceptable for use for a specific purpose?"

This track focuses general modelling aspects: model design methods, model representation forms and languages, model interpretation for verification, efforts and approaches for validation of model itself and as a part of simulation system. Application areas may range from archiving and communication technologies over industrial solutions to scientific systems.

Special attention is paid to formal approaches for verification and validation. Here, algebraic methods for the model constructing and generating as well as semantic dependent model interpreting are considered. In this context, XML-based model specification, transformation, and interpretation techniques are also significant.

The track handles VV&A methodology (VV&A planning, confidence levels, risk estimation, organisation, documentation, standards, cost estimation, technique application, result presentation, subject matter expert selection, fidelity, automation potential) as well as VV&A technology (documentation, CASE-tools, cross checking, requirements specification, knowledge based systems, configuration management, tool overview, simulation environments).

Last but not least this track also looks at:
Security Testing

- Research of existing processes for the purpose of their analysis and transformation
- New methods for effective dynamic and static process analysis either during its runtime or without necessity to run the process.
- Emulation of operating systems and virtual platforms

Conference Workshops and Tracks
Simulation-based evaluation of interactive systems

IT systems are becoming increasingly more complex, both in terms of their scale and in terms of their individual functionalities. At the same time, the systems should be intuitively usable and should possess a flat learning curve for the user. The integration of the users into the analysis and the entire evaluation process is thus essential and new methods to increase the efficiency of evaluation are strictly required. One particularly useful method for the efficient evaluation and analysis is simulation. Within the scope of the workshop, new innovative methods and approaches for the practically oriented simulation-based evaluation of interaction-centric IT systems should be presented. An example could be a new approach to the simulation of reality in Living Labs or the usage of agent-based modelling for the simulation of distributed, heterogeneous and possibly autonomous systems.

Workshop on Simulation in Lean Manufacturing

Simulation has become a powerful tool to help manufacturers streamline their production and output in order to more rapidly react and play to the everchanging market place while reducing costs at every step. Presentations are solicited that cover part or the whole of this lean production process such as simulation in: Work Standardization, 5S Workplace Organization, Visual Controls, Batch Size Reduction, Points of Use Storage, Quality at the Source, Workflow Practice, Improved Information and Product Flow, Cellular Manufacturing, Pull & Synchronous Scheduling, Six Sigma & Total Quality, Rapid Setup, Work Teams for Cell Management & Process Improvement, Simplified scheduling and Kanban inventory management.
Simulation-Based Optimization in Industry

"Simulation models are by nature evaluative – instead of suggesting any optimal solutions, a simulation model evaluates a given set of design variables and generates the required performance measures. For a decision maker, the process of finding a sufficiently good design setting could be too time-consuming and in many cases impossible if the search space is huge. Simulation-based optimization (SBO) is a relatively new technique that can be applied to seek the “optimal” setting for a complex system model based on one or multiple performance measures generated from simulation by using various searching methodologies. On one hand, it has been noticed from the recent publications that SBO has been successfully applied to address a wide range of real-world industrial problems with very promising results. On the other hand, it is believed that the potential benefits offered by SBO and related tools are not yet fully explored or understood on the part of industrial prospective users.

The aim of this workshop is to bring scientists, researchers and industrial practitioners working in simulation from various disciplines with interest in optimization together to share their experiences in applying SBO technologies to a wide range of industrial applications."
