Call For Papers

The association and interaction between software engineering (SE) and big data analytics (BDA) have gained attentions and popularity among a large number of researchers in multiple disciplines, which particularly encourages and influences the leading-edge research in SE. For example, it has been identified that dealing with the various Vs (such as volume, variety, velocity, veracity, etc.) of big data demands both novel functional features (e.g., new analytics algorithms and tools) and non-functional improvements (e.g., continuous delivery and quality assurance) of software systems in the BDA domain.

Accordingly, this workshop intends to bring together researchers, practitioners and educators from multiple disciplines to discuss the rigor, relevance, experience, challenges and opportunities of SE-driven BDA, as well as investigating the interaction between the both. To help conclude the status of empirical and theoretical research in this area, and to help further develop a common research agenda for increasing the quality of current work and fostering future collaborations, the workshop’s topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Theoretical foundations of SE in the BDA research.
- Software architectures and design patterns for constructing BDA applications.
- Quality assurance of BDA software systems.
- Empirical primary and secondary studies in SE for/in BDA.
- Evidential assessments on the rigor, effectiveness, and relevance of a variety of software technologies in the BDA domain.
- Experiences in applying theoretical and empirical knowledge of SE to BDA practice.
- Challenges and lessons learned from adopting SE techniques and methods in the BDA research and practice.
- Areas where future SE for/in BDA studies are needed.
- Research agenda for maturing and enriching SE for/in BDA practices.

The workshop will accept both research and industrial papers, depending on the quality of the submissions. The length will be between 6 and 8 pages for full technical paper, experience report or literature survey paper. Industry presentations will also be accepted with an abstract or summary of 2 pages. The selection process is based on each submitted paper reviewed by no less than two members of the Program Committee.

A selective set of accepted papers will be invited to submit an extended version for publication in the special issue of the Springer Computing Journal (http://www.springer.com/computer/journal/607). The extension will need to have more than 30% new content.
