ETRI Journal Special Issue on Smart Interactions in Cyber-physical Systems: Humans, Agents, Robots, Machines and Sensors

The ability to distinguish human from non-human capability is becoming more difficult to discern. Given this, it is common that cyber physical systems (CPS) are rapidly integrating with human functionality. Humans depend more and more on CPS to execute their daily existence.
Constant indications of a future where human and non-human CPS relationships interact consistently and allow each to navigate through a set of non-trivial goals is an interesting and rich research, discovery and practical work area. The evidence of convergence is gaining clarity quickly, showing that we can use complex organizations of sensors, artificial intelligence and data to augment human life and knowledge. To further this area, we must define how to model, design, validate, implement, and experiment with these complex systems of interaction, communication, and networking, which will be developed and explored in this Special Issue.

This Special Issue will include ideas of the future relevant for understanding, discerning, and developing the relationship between humans and non-human CPS and the practical nature of systems that facilitate the integration between humans, agents, robots, machines, and sensors. Examples of topics of interest:

• Human-centered agents
• Design, modeling and evaluation of CPS
• Assistive technology and robots
• Human robot social interaction
• Human behavior modeling and activity recognition
• Ubiquitous robots and agent challenges
• Autonomic capabilities and semantic reasoning
• Social interaction of CPS
